AI Saves Anaheim (?)

In late February, I told you about my co-worker’s 78-year-old aunt and her declining memory.

Is it Alzheimer’s Dementia (AD)?

In three weeks time, the family will know more.

As we mentioned in February, this disease is a Texas-sized problem.

Specifically…

  • Seven million American seniors are living with Alzheimer’s today — that’s roughly the population of Houston, Texas.

Speaking of Texas, here’s how the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease varies from state-to-state:

But AI is already shedding new light on this awful disease…

Your Rundown for Friday, April 5, 2024...

AI’s New Lethal Weapon

In February, researchers at UC San Francisco announced they’ve designed AI that can predict the onset of Alzheimer’s seven years before symptoms appear with 72% accuracy, using Random Forest (RF) models.

Now, AI is tackling a lethal scourge that, every year, kills more people globally than all cancers combined…

Sepsis — the body’s extreme reaction to infection — is fast-moving and incredibly tough to diagnose.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 350,000 American adults with sepsis die in hospital or are discharged to hospice care. Annually.

  • Imagine the population of Anaheim, California being wiped off the map every year! That’s what we’re up against…

When it comes to sepsis, early detection is the difference between life or death.

So, on Wednesday, Chicago-based startup Prenosis announced it won FDA approval for an AI-powered sepsis diagnostic tool.

“Sepsis ImmunoScore uses 22 different parameters like temperature, heart rate and cell counts to help clinicians assess a patient’s risk of sepsis,” CNBC notes.

The AI tool then calculates a patient’s total sepsis-risk score, highlighting the top-four reasons for alarm.

“Doctors and nurses often have to monitor each of these parameters individually,” CNBC adds.

“Prenosis’ solution uses AI to evaluate all of those markers at once.”

Even better, Sepsis ImmunoScore is easy to use, integrating into a patient’s electronic record.

After FDA approval, the AI diagnostic tool is now for sale to hospitals around the world.

I must say, if I’m going into a hospital for surgery or urgent care, I’d much prefer the one using AI for all it’s worth.
