Greetings from Panama…

“My wife and I moved from the Baltimore area to Panama (as in the Panama Canal) in Jul. 2018,” says an expat reader.

“We left the USA for many reasons -- odious taxes, repressive Deep State gubment and 534 idiots (except Rand Paul) in Congress.

“Life in Panama is much less hectic and expensive than it was back in Maryland. We made the correct decision.”

And another reader really misses the Chevy Volt: “The average hybrid vehicle couldn't come close to the versatility that you got with the Volt,” he says.

“It was the ideal design. Too bad it is no longer available or that the electric-powered motor with a gasoline generator backup has not been used in other vehicles. This was a car that you could go anywhere, as far as you needed, and have peace of mind.

“We used to laugh at the rumor that the Nissan Leaf, at the time, came with free towing for those occasions when you were stuck on the road out of juice.”

Death, Taxes… and a UBI Experiment

Heads up, everyone: Today is your last day to file your taxes.

And in honor of this late Tax Day 2021, a group called Patriotic Millionaires is planning protests in New York and Washington D.C. today.

“The Patriotic Millionaires are in favor of Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s ultra millionaires tax plan, which would put a 2% annual tax on wealth over $50 million, rising to 3% for wealth over $1 billion,” CNBC reports.

It’s an exclusive club too. The pro-tax members “boast annual incomes of over $1 million or assets worth over $5 million.

“Leaders of the Patriotic Millionaires… are organizing a group of up to 30 protesters to converge on Bezos’ New York residence with a billboard that says ‘Cut the bull----. Tax the rich,’” CNN reports.

Another billboard depicts the laughing faces of Bezos, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg with the caption: “Tax Me If You Can.”

CNBC notes: “The mobile billboards will also make appearances in front of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s Washington residence, the offices of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in New York City, and [other] D.C.-based places….”

We’ll see…

While Tax Day is upon us, are we one step closer to universal basic income (UBI)?  “The families of more than 65 million children will start receiving enhanced child tax credit monthly payments of up to $300 on July 15, the Biden administration announced Monday,” CNN says.

“The temporary benefit, which will be sent to 39 million households and covers 88% of children in the US, stems from the Democrats' $1.9 trillion coronavirus rescue package.”

[Thoughts? Write in with your take on this UBI experiment. We’ll feature your opinions later this week.]
