L.A., ICE and FAFO
Wednesday’s episode on the ICE raids in Los Angeles unleashed a flood of passionate responses — proof this is an issue people care about, deeply.
When I mentioned the sheer volume of feedback to my coworker, he asked: “So, what’s the vibe?”
Half-joking, I told him it felt like a general dose of “f*** around and find out.” But as I dug in, it became clear: the conversation’s more layered than that…
Some readers, like Tara S., are torn after seeing the situation firsthand: “I was recently in L.A. and witnessed the heavy ICE presence. It feels like a police state.
“The fact is, many L.A. residents have turned their heads for years and knowingly hired illegal workers. Surely, a better solution can be found than harsh and brutal treatment by ICE officers, separating families via deportation. I agree: we need more of a scalpel than a sweeping approach.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Martin C. argues the time for half-measures is long gone: “Frankly, America has been stupid and too damned nice for DECADES, with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) letting virtually anyone into the country who applied or sneaked across the border — criminals, drug dealers, gang members, indigents looking for handouts, pregnant women looking for birthright citizenship, etc.
“That’s why I think ICE needs to round up ALL the people who are here illegally, and send them back to their home countries. Then, if they want to emigrate here, apply for citizenship and wait in line like the millions of HONEST immigrants who have come before them.”
For some readers, the issue comes down to safety — even if the solution isn’t pretty. Jeff K. writes: “As distasteful as this may seem to some, it’s the ‘bitter medicine’ the U.S. must now take to preserve national sovereignty, community safety and the integrity of our borders and laws. I don’t like it, but I don’t see another way.
“Yes, the raids by ICE (including those in L.A.) make American citizens safer.”
But not everyone is convinced these tactics square with American ideals…

Shotgun vs. Scalpel
“To me, the ICE raids are clearly in conflict with American values,” says Margaret B.
“They more closely resemble the tactics of a dictatorship than those of a democratic republic. What is needed is a just, even-handed system — not the equivalent of dropping bunker-buster bombs on the situation. We can keep our country safe without losing what makes us who we are.”
Duane G. questions where the line should be drawn: “Are we going to follow and enforce the rule of law, or selectively choose when it suits our political interests? As an American citizen, I want to protect my fellow Americans and their best interests.
“All these illegal immigrants had the choice and knew they were committing a crime when they came here. If we continue to treat illegal immigrants better than Americans, who is the fool?”
Finally, Larry A. urges a bit of nuance, especially when it comes to hard-working people: “I get that laws matter, but we should not alienate the illegal immigrants who are here to work and better themselves. We should, however, track down and deport all those who are guilty of serious crimes.
“In my opinion, there should be discretion used — not getting rid of people who are here doing essential work. After all, they help keep the economy’s wheels turning.”
