The Rise of Kash Patel in Trump’s Inner Circle

Pete Hegseth’s embattled nomination for Secretary of Defense has sparked intense debate among lawmakers and the public.

While President-elect Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Hegseth, some Republican senators, particularly women like Joni Ernst, are hesitant amid troubling reports of sexual misconduct, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement.

Reader feedback reflects this divide…

Gilbert M. says bluntly: “We don’t need a horndog who can’t handle his liquor” leading the Pentagon.

But Henry M. says: “In America, we are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. No Hegseth investigation turned up any charges and no trial was ever held.”

“Hegseth should bow out,” Bill U. counters. “His messianic views on Israel are way out on the fringe; he doesn’t seem like a defense official. Totally inappropriate.”

On the other hand, Kevin M. says: “Pete Hegseth should be Defense Secretary. Don't fall for this political hit job by his detractors!”

Charles S. agrees: “He’s a really important nominee. If you don't back him, I won't back you.”

But Sarah H. suggests: “Trump should drop Hegseth. Bad choice to begin with. Should be someone with more experience and stature.”

Sue N. simply says: “YES FOR PETE.”

As Pete Hegseth's nomination continues to divide public opinion, President-elect Trump has turned his attention to another controversial pick: Kash Patel for FBI Director.

Your Rundown for Wednesday, December 11, 2024...

A “Deep State” Relic?

The 44-year-old’s rapid ascent through Trump's inner circle has been marked by his unwavering loyalty and his role in challenging claims of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Patel's career trajectory is notable: Starting as a public defender, he later became a Justice Department prosecutor.

His pivotal moment came when he worked as a counselor on the House Intelligence Committee, helping Trump navigate allegations of Russian connections.

This led to high-ranking positions in Trump’s White House — including chief of staff to the secretary of defense and deputy director of national intelligence.

Patel’s nomination, however, has raised eyebrows because of several controversies…

  1. Patel once expressed a desire to shut down the FBI’s D.C. headquarters and reopen it as a “deep state” museum.
  1. Patel also vowed to “come after” journalists, raising fears about press freedom under his leadership.
  1. Then there are concerns that Patel might use the FBI to target Trump's political opponents.
  1. For what it’s worth, former Attorney General William Barr says that Patel has “virtually no qualifications” for a high-level FBI position.

Despite the controversy, Patel has garnered support from key Senate Republicans.

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who will oversee the Senate confirmation process, has signaled his approval, even calling for the current FBI Director Christopher Wray to step down.

(Wray's 10-year term ends in 2027.)

That said, Kash Patel’s nomination has far-reaching implications… And some might say he's already having an impact.

For example, Trump announced Kash Patel as his choice for FBI director on Saturday, November 30th.

The following day, Joe Biden pardoned his son, Hunter.

The suspicious timing has fueled speculation that Biden's sweeping clemency for Hunter — covering a full decade — was a preemptive move, anticipating potential investigations under Patel’s leadership.

Ultimately, Patel’s nomination represents a critical juncture for the FBI and raises important questions about the balance between political loyalty as well as the future of federal law enforcement.
